On the spot deep-frying (candy bars, Twinkies, Oreos, to name just a few) seems to be all the rage at country fairs and amusement parks. A lot of it is being done in Texas, but the prediction is that it will spread as these vendors seem to be tossing anything and everything into the old deep fryer. And while the idea of a deep fried candy bar may make you Snicker (ow!) the truth is that a lot of people are waiting in long lines to pay $3 for a fried Twinkie.
Deep fried foods taste good. That could be just about the only reason that very reputable folks like the editors at the Wall St. Journal decide to give one of the most unhealthy and fattening trends so much ink. Perhaps American business needs a good laugh. Unfortunately its a lot more serious.
Some may say it's only a once in a while treat, go ahead, indulge yourself! But they are wrong. Amusement parks and special events are family oriented and exposing our kids to this kind of food, especially at early ages and in a celebratory environment, is the wrong approach. Having fun, especially these days, is a very important part of life. It's the times that have the most positive impact and naturally we associate food and fun. So what happens when get depressed, or sad, or lonely? We seek out those foods that make us feel good.
Two basic problems here. Three if you count heart and artery clogging. First is that the makers of Twinkies are actually helping vendors perfect the skill of frying their product at these outdoor events; testing the water, flour, frying temperature, outdoor temperature and humidity and creating a unique recipe that will work under these specific conditions. Ahh the perfect fried Twinkie - what a goal! Second is that we can only predict that many adults and kids will try to do the same thing at home -- perhaps another brand extension on the way? Already breaded and oiled Twinkies that you can microwave in 17 seconds? Thank goodness for Bounty paper towels.
Bottom line. We don't need more sugar loaded, fat loaded, preservative loaded, artificially flavored and colored food trends.
